Product Dimensions:
Meet the Apache Thornless Blackberry: a University of Arkansas variety with large, glossy, sweet berries on upright, thornless canes that need no trellis.
WHAT ARRIVES
2 live starter plugs, each approximately 8 to 10 inches tall, rooted and actively growing. Plant them in full sun and well-drained soil once your last frost has passed.
PET NOTE
Blackberry isn't listed in the ASPCA plant database, so we can't make a pet-safety claim either way. Ripe berries are a common garden fruit for people and birds.
WHERE IT SHINES
Home orchards, backyard berry patches and edible borders. Because the canes are thornless and stand upright, planting, pruning and picking are easy and scratch-free.
GROWING IT
Plant in full sun, at least 6 hours a day, in well-drained, slightly acidic soil, and keep it moist during flowering and fruiting. Space plants about 5 feet apart. Canes grow upright to about 3 to 6 feet; tip new canes at about 42 inches in summer to encourage branching.
CLIMATE
Grows in USDA zones 5 to 9. Apache needs a cold winter to fruit well: university sources put its chill requirement at about 800 to 900 hours, so it may fruit poorly in mild-winter areas such as Florida and the Gulf Coast.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Blackberries fruit on second-year canes, so expect your first harvest about a year after planting. White spring flowers are followed by berries in early to mid summer. After a cane fruits, cut it to the ground to make room for new canes.
