Meet the Black Mission Fig: one of the best-loved fig varieties, with deep purple-black skin and sweet, honey-like pink flesh, delicious fresh, dried or made into preserves.
WHAT ARRIVES
2 live starter plants, healthy and actively growing. Plant them in full sun and well-drained soil once your last frost has passed, or grow them in large patio pots.
IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTE
The ASPCA lists Ficus species as toxic to dogs, cats and horses, causing stomach and skin irritation. Fig sap can irritate skin and eyes, and on skin exposed to sunlight it can cause a burn-like rash, so wear gloves when pruning and rinse off any sap. Keep pets and children from chewing leaves and stems.
WHERE IT SHINES
Home orchards, backyards and large patio containers. It's a common fig type, so a single plant sets fruit without a pollinator tree or fig wasp.
GROWING IT
Give it full sun and well-drained soil, watering regularly while it establishes. In the ground it's a vigorous grower that can reach up to 25 feet, but it responds well to pruning and stays much smaller in a container.
CLIMATE
Best suited to USDA zones 7 to 10. At the cooler end of that range, protect it in winter, since frost can kill stems back.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Young plants often begin fruiting within their first few years. In warm climates, Black Mission can produce two crops: a smaller breba crop in early summer and a larger main crop from late summer into fall. Two plants give you a bigger eventual harvest.
