WHAT ARRIVES
2 live starter plugs, each approximately 6 inches tall. Because these plants are grown from cuttings, size can vary slightly from one plug to the next.

PET & THORN NOTE
Bougainvillea isn't listed in the ASPCA plant database. Some veterinary sources report that eating the flowers or leaves can cause mild stomach upset, and the sap can irritate skin. The stems have sharp thorns, so wear gloves when pruning and plant it away from paths, play areas and spots where pets roam.

Trellises, fences and patio containers, pruned compact or trained taller.

GROWING IT
Plant in full sun, at least 6 hours a day, in well-drained, sandy soil; avoid heavy clay that holds water. Water deeply while it establishes, then let the soil dry out between waterings, and water less in winter. Overwatering can cause root rot. Feed lightly with a bloom fertilizer during the growing season, and prune to keep it full.

CLIMATE
Perennial in USDA zones 10 to 11, and in protected spots in 9b. Frost damages it below about 30°F. In cooler areas, grow it in a container brought indoors for winter or as a summer annual.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Bougainvillea blooms best when kept a little dry; too much water or nitrogen means more leaves and fewer flowers. The roots are fine and break easily, so don't loosen the root ball when planting.
