Product Dimensions:
Meet the Illinois Everbearing Mulberry: a self-fertile, cold-hardy fruit tree that ripens sweet purple-black berries over a long summer season instead of all at once.
WHAT ARRIVES
2 live starter plugs, each approximately 10 inches tall, rooted and actively growing. Plant them in full sun and well-drained soil once your last frost has passed.
PET NOTE
Mulberry isn't listed in the ASPCA plant database, so we can't make a pet-safety claim either way. Ripe berries are widely eaten by people and birds, but unripe green fruit and the milky sap can cause stomach upset if eaten.
WHERE IT SHINES
Home orchards and backyards with room for a tree. It's a natural hybrid of the native red mulberry (Morus rubra) and white mulberry (Morus alba), first found in Illinois, and one of the most widely planted mulberries in North America.
GROWING IT
Give it full sun and well-drained soil, watering regularly while it establishes. It's a fast grower that can reach up to 30 feet, but it responds well to pruning and can be kept much smaller and easier to harvest. One tree fruits on its own, though a second can boost yield.
CLIMATE
Hardy in USDA zones 4 to 8, making it one of the most cold-tolerant fruiting mulberries.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Berries about 1 to 1.5 inches long ripen gradually from early summer into late summer. Because ripe fruit drops steadily for weeks and stains heavily, plant it away from light-colored patios, decks, driveways and walkways.
