WHAT ARRIVES
2 live starter plugs, each approximately 5 inches tall. Because these plants are grown from cuttings, size can vary slightly from one plug to the next.
PET NOTE
Blackberry isn't listed in the ASPCA plant database, so we can't make a pet-safety claim either way. Ripe berries are a common garden fruit for people and birds. The canes are thornless.
WHERE IT SHINES
Trellises and fence lines in home gardens. Space plants 3 to 5 feet apart.
GROWING IT
Plant in full sun in well-drained soil, and water regularly during flowering and fruiting. Its vigorous, semi-erect canes need a trellis or support to stay tidy. After a cane fruits, cut it to the ground to make room for new canes.
CLIMATE
Grows in USDA zones 6 to 9. It needs a high chill requirement of roughly 800 hours or more, so it performs best where winters are truly cold. In mild-winter areas such as Florida and the Gulf Coast, it may leaf out unevenly and fruit poorly.
WHAT TO EXPECT
It fruits on second-year canes, so expect your first harvest about a year after planting. Berries ripen mid-season, with large, sweet fruit and heavy yields once established.
