Meet the Maypop Passionflower: a native vine with intricate purple-and-white blooms that look tropical but come from the hardiest passionflower in North America.

WHAT ARRIVES
2 live starter plugs, each approximately 8 to 10 inches tall, rooted and actively growing. Plant directly in the ground after your last frost, or pot them up briefly if you need more time before planting out.

PET & PLANTING NOTE
Maypop isn't listed in the ASPCA plant database, so we can't make a pet-safety claim either way; check with your vet or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control line if pets tend to chew on vines. Maypop spreads by underground runners that can come up several feet from the main plant, so give it room or pull suckers regularly.

WHERE IT SHINES
Trellises, fences, arbors and wildlife gardens. Bumblebees and carpenter bees visit the flowers, and maypop is a larval host plant for the Gulf fritillary butterfly.

GROWING IT
Plant in full sun to part shade. Water moderately and consistently while it establishes; once rooted, it handles heat, dry spells and poor soil well. Provide something to climb, or it will sprawl. Vines can grow 10 feet or more in a season, typically reaching 8 to 16 feet.

CLIMATE
Hardy in USDA zones 5 to 9, and native to the Southeast, including Florida. In cooler zones, top growth dies back to the ground in winter; that's normal, and new shoots return from the roots in spring.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Maypop flowers need pollen from a genetically different plant to set fruit. Ripe fruit is egg-sized, turns yellow-green and wrinkles slightly, and often drops when ready. Eat only fully ripe fruit. Maypop does best in the ground; its spreading roots make it unhappy in pots long term.
