Meet Tecoma stans 'Yellow Bells': a fast-growing, sun-loving shrub, also called Esperanza or Yellow Elder, covered in clusters of bright yellow trumpet flowers from spring through fall.
WHAT ARRIVES
2 live starter plugs, each approximately 8 to 10 inches tall. Because these are living plants, size can vary slightly from one plug to the next.
PET & PLANTING NOTE
Tecoma stans doesn't appear in the ASPCA plant database, so we can't make a pet-safety claim either way. As a general precaution, keep it out of reach of pets and grazing animals. In warm climates, it can spread by seed, so remove spent flower clusters before seed pods form.
WHERE IT SHINES
Pollinator and hummingbird gardens, sunny borders, informal hedges and large patio containers. Hummingbirds, butterflies and bees visit the flowers all season.
GROWING IT
Plant in full sun in average, well-drained soil. Water regularly for the first few weeks while roots establish, then reduce watering; established plants are heat and drought tolerant. Plant both plugs together for a fuller shrub, or one in each of two spots.
CLIMATE
Evergreen in USDA zones 10 to 11, where it can grow into a large shrub or small tree. In zones 8 and 9, frost usually kills it back to the ground, and it regrows from the roots into a 3- to 6-foot shrub each spring. In colder areas, grow it in a large container brought indoors before frost.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Where it dies back in winter, the plant looks bare until it resprouts in spring. That's normal dormancy, not a sign of a struggling plant. Stems are brittle, so plant it out of strong wind or heavy foot traffic.
