Meet Sweet Potato Vine 'Blackie': a fast-growing trailing vine with deeply lobed, near-black purple leaves, grown for dramatic color that makes brighter plants stand out all season.
WHAT ARRIVES
2 live starter plugs, each approximately 8 to 10 inches long. Because these plants are grown from cuttings, size can vary slightly from one plug to the next. Young plugs look different from the mature, fully trailing vines shown in reference photos.
PET-FRIENDLY NOTE
Sweet potato vine is listed as non-toxic to dogs, cats and horses by the ASPCA. Seeds of Ipomoea plants can be toxic if eaten, but ornamental vines rarely flower or set seed.
WHERE IT SHINES
Spilling over hanging baskets, window boxes and mixed containers, or trailing over walls and raised beds. Its dark foliage pairs well with bright flowers and with chartreuse plants such as Sweet Potato Vine 'Margarita.'
GROWING IT
Plant in full sun in average, well-drained soil, and keep the soil evenly moist, watering regularly while roots establish. Vines stay about 6 to 12 inches tall while trailing 3 to 6 feet by season's end.
CLIMATE
Tender perennial in USDA zones 9 to 11, where it may die back after frost and regrow from its roots. In colder areas, grow it as a fast-filling summer annual.
WHAT TO EXPECT
'Blackie' gets its signature near-black color from light. In full sun the leaves stay deep purple-black, but in shadier spots they can turn greener. Give young plugs a few weeks to root in before they begin trailing. Ornamental sweet potato vines can form tubers, but they aren't grown for eating.
