USDA Hardiness Zone: 9 to 11
Expected Plant Height: Over 10 feet
Moisture Needs: High
Product Dimensions:
Meet the Red Cuban Banana: a striking banana plant with purple-red stems, broad tropical leaves and sweet, red-skinned fruit that stands out from the everyday yellow banana.
WHAT ARRIVES
2 live starter plugs, each approximately 8 to 10 inches tall, rooted and actively growing. Plant them in the ground in warm climates, or in a large container if you'll need to move them for winter.
PET-FRIENDLY NOTE
Banana (Musa) is listed as non-toxic to dogs, cats and horses by the ASPCA.
WHERE IT SHINES
Pool areas, patios and tropical landscape beds. Its purple-red stems and big paddle-shaped leaves make it a statement plant long before it fruits. Plant both plugs together for a fuller clump.
GROWING IT
Give it full sun, at least 6 to 8 hours a day, with rich soil that holds moisture but drains well. Water steadily and feed regularly during active growth. It grows best when temperatures stay above 65°F. In the ground, it can reach 10 to 18 feet tall; it stays smaller in a container.
CLIMATE
Fruits best in USDA zones 10 to 11. In zone 9, it may survive the winter, but frost damages the leaves and fruiting is unlikely. In cooler climates, grow it in a large container and move it indoors before cold weather.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Red bananas take patience: plants often need about 20 months or more of warm growth before the first bunch, and fruiting in containers or cooler climates is less reliable. The fruit ripens from dark purple to red with some yellow. Each stem fruits once and then dies back, while new pups grow from the base to replace it.
