Meet Xanthosoma 'Mickey Mouse': a playful tropical plant with glossy green leaves splashed in creamy white, each with a pocket at the tip that gives it a mouse-ear shape.
WHAT ARRIVES
2 live plant, approximately 12 to 15 inches tall, rooted and actively growing. Variegation varies naturally from leaf to leaf and plant to plant, so yours may differ from the photos.
IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTE
Like other elephant ears that the ASPCA lists as toxic to dogs and cats, this plant contains calcium oxalate crystals. Chewing it can cause mouth irritation, drooling and vomiting, and the sap can irritate skin. Keep it out of reach of pets and small children.
WHERE IT SHINES
Bright, humid spots indoors, such as bathrooms and kitchens, or shaded patios and tropical beds in summer.
GROWING IT
Give it bright, indirect light and avoid direct sun, which can scorch the pale variegated areas. Use rich, well-draining potting mix, water when the top 1 to 2 inches of soil feel dry, and avoid soggy soil. It prefers high humidity. It's a fast grower, reaching about 3 to 5 feet tall indoors and larger outdoors.
CLIMATE
Grows outdoors in USDA zones 10 to 11. Elsewhere, grow it as a houseplant, or move it outdoors for summer and back inside before temperatures drop below about 55°F.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Reduce watering in winter, when growth slows. It's sometimes sold as Alocasia 'Mickey Mouse,' but it's a Xanthosoma, a close elephant-ear relative.
