Meet Barbados Cherry: a small tropical tree, also called Acerola, grown for glossy red, sweet-tart fruit that's famously rich in natural vitamin C, after pretty pink flowers.
WHAT ARRIVES
2 live starter plugs, each approximately 10 inches tall. Because these plants are grown from cuttings, size can vary slightly from one plug to the next.
PET NOTE
Barbados cherry isn't listed in the ASPCA plant database, so we can't make a pet-safety claim either way. The ripe fruit is a common food for people; remove pits before sharing fruit with pets.
WHERE IT SHINES
Home orchards, edible hedges and large patio containers.
GROWING IT
Plant in full sun to part sun in sandy to rich, well-drained soil. It's low-maintenance once established. Left unpruned it can reach 20 feet or more in frost-free areas, but it's easily kept much smaller with regular pruning.
CLIMATE
Perennial in USDA zones 9b to 11. Mature trees tolerate brief dips to about 28°F and often regrow from the roots if frozen back. Elsewhere, grow it in a large container brought indoors for winter.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Fruit comes in flushes through much of the warm season, with the main crop in spring. Ripe cherries are soft and best eaten or processed soon after picking.
