Meet Cuphea 'David Verity': a beloved hummingbird plant covered in dark orange, cigar-shaped tubular flowers with a flared yellow-orange tip, blooming continuously until frost.
WHAT ARRIVES
2 live starter plugs, each approximately 10 to 12 inches tall. Because these plants are grown from cuttings, size can vary slightly from one plug to the next.
PET NOTE
Cuphea isn't listed in the ASPCA plant database, so we can't make a pet-safety claim either way. If pets tend to chew on plants, check with your vet before planting it where they can reach.
WHERE IT SHINES
Hummingbird borders and large containers. Space plants 2 to 3 feet apart.
GROWING IT
Plant in full sun to part shade in average, well-drained soil. It's drought tolerant once established and needs only average water. In warm climates it grows into an evergreen shrub about 3 to 5 feet tall and wide, and stays smaller where frost cuts it back.
CLIMATE
Perennial in USDA zones 8 to 11. It's notably cold-tolerant for a Cuphea: the roots survive hard freezes, so it usually regrows in spring after frost kills the top.
WHAT TO EXPECT
It blooms nonstop wherever frost doesn't stop it, and it's one of the richest nectar sources for hummingbirds.
