Meet Fernleaf Lavender: a bushy, heat-tolerant lavender with finely cut, fern-like gray-green foliage and violet-blue flower spikes over a long season from spring through fall.

WHAT ARRIVES
2 live starter plugs, well-rooted and ready to plant in the ground, a raised bed or a container. Because these are living plants grown from cuttings, size can vary slightly from one plug to the next.

IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTE
The ASPCA lists lavender as toxic to dogs, cats and horses because of its essential oils (linalool and linalyl acetate), which can cause nausea and vomiting if eaten. Keep it out of reach of pets that chew on plants.

WHERE IT SHINES
Sunny borders, patios, herb gardens and containers, or as a low informal hedge with plants about 2 feet apart. Unglazed terra cotta pots help wick away extra moisture.

GROWING IT
Plant in full sun in fast-draining, lean to moderately fertile soil; good drainage matters more than fertility. Water regularly while it establishes, then let the soil dry out between waterings. Wet, heavy soil is the most common way to lose a lavender. Clip faded flower spikes to keep it blooming. It grows about 2 feet tall, up to 3 feet in flower, and 1.5 to 3 feet wide.

CLIMATE
A tender perennial in USDA zones 9 to 11. In colder areas, grow it in a pot brought indoors for winter, or as a fragrant annual.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Unlike many lavenders, Fernleaf handles heat and humidity well, so it's a good choice for warm-summer gardens. Good air circulation helps in humid weather. Its correct common names are Fernleaf or Jagged Lavender; names like Indian Lavender belong to other species.
