Meet Coleus 'Magilla Perilla': a fast-growing foliage plant with bold leaves splashed in purple, pink, green and cream, for instant color in containers and beds in sun or shade.
WHAT ARRIVES
2 live starter plugs, each approximately 8 to 10 inches tall, rooted and actively growing. Plant them outdoors once your last frost has passed.
IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTE
This plant is not edible. Although it's sold under the name "Perilla," it has been identified as a coleus, not the edible perilla (shiso) used in cooking. Coleus is considered toxic to dogs, cats and horses if eaten, per the ASPCA. Keep it out of reach of pets, children and grazing animals.
WHERE IT SHINES
As the tall centerpiece of a mixed container, or as a bold accent in beds and borders. Two plugs planted together fill out a large pot faster than one.
GROWING IT
Plant in full sun to shade. More light brings out stronger pink and purple tones, while shadier spots keep the plant lush without stretching. Keep the soil evenly moist; it wilts quickly if it dries out but recovers fast once watered. Space plants about 12 inches apart. Pinch the growing tips every few weeks to encourage branching and a fuller mound up to about 2 feet tall and wide.
CLIMATE
A warm-season plant that won't survive frost; grow it as a summer annual in most climates. To keep it for next year, root a few cuttings in water on a sunny windowsill before frost.
WHAT TO EXPECT
'Magilla Perilla' rarely flowers and is grown for its leaves. Color varies with light, so plants in sun and shade may look different.
