WHAT ARRIVES
2 live starter plugs, each approximately 8 to 10 inches tall, rooted and actively growing. Plant them in the ground or a container with something to climb.
IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTE
Mandevilla isn't listed in the ASPCA plant database, but like other plants in the dogbane family, it has milky sap that can upset the stomach if eaten and irritate skin or eyes. Wear gloves when pruning, and keep it out of reach of pets and children who chew on plants.
WHERE IT SHINES
Trellises, fences, mailbox posts and patio containers, or spilling from a hanging basket. Hummingbirds visit the flowers.
GROWING IT
Plant in full sun to light shade in rich, well-drained soil. Water regularly while it establishes, then let the soil dry slightly between waterings. It grows faster and blooms more as the weather heats up. It climbs by twining stems to about 6 to 8 feet, so give it a support early and guide new growth where you want it.
CLIMATE
Perennial in USDA zones 10 to 11, where it can bloom nearly year-round. In zone 9 it needs frost protection. Elsewhere, grow it in a container brought indoors before frost, or enjoy it as a summer annual.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Young plugs flower more heavily once they settle in and temperatures rise. It's a patented variety (PP#19698), so propagation is prohibited.
