Product Dimensions:
Meet the Pakistan Mulberry: a fast-growing, self-fertile fruit tree famous for extra-long, sweet berries that are hard to find at any grocery store.
WHAT ARRIVES
2 live starter plugs, each approximately 10 to 12 inches tall, rooted and actively growing. Plant them in well-drained soil in a sunny spot once your last frost has passed.
PET NOTE
Mulberry isn't listed in the ASPCA plant database, so we can't make a pet-safety claim either way. Ripe berries are widely eaten by people and birds, but unripe green fruit and the milky sap can cause stomach upset if eaten, so keep pets away from fallen unripe fruit.
WHERE IT SHINES
Home orchards and backyards with room for a tree. Plant it away from patios, decks, driveways and walkways, since ripe mulberries stain heavily.
GROWING IT
Give it full sun to half-day sun in well-drained soil, and water regularly while it establishes. It's a fast, vigorous grower that can reach up to 30 feet, but it responds well to pruning and can be kept much smaller and easier to harvest. Pakistan Mulberry is self-fertile, so one tree fruits on its own; plant both for a bigger harvest, or share one.
CLIMATE
Best suited to USDA zones 8 to 10. It's less cold-hardy than common mulberries, so zone 7 is marginal.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Expect fruit within about 2 to 3 years of planting. Berries ripen to deep red to dark purple, mainly in spring, with extra crops possible in warm climates. They can reach up to 4 inches long, with a rich, sweet flavor.
