Meet the Pink Desert Rose: a sculptural, low-water succulent with a swollen trunk and bright pink trumpet flowers, prized by collectors as a slow-growing conversation piece that gets more striking with age.

WHAT ARRIVES
2 live seedlings, each approximately 4 to 6 inches tall, in starter plugs. Pot them up into a cactus or succulent mix in a container with drainage holes soon after they arrive.

IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTE
Every part of this plant is toxic to dogs, cats and horses, per the ASPCA. It contains cardiac glycosides similar to those in oleander, and eating it can cause vomiting, diarrhea, an irregular heartbeat and, in serious cases, death. The sap can irritate skin and eyes, so wear gloves when handling. This plant isn't the right choice for homes where pets or children tend to chew on plants.

WHERE IT SHINES
Sunny windowsills, bright patios and bonsai-style containers where its trunk can show off. Two plants let you try one indoors and one on a sunny patio.

GROWING IT
Give it full sun outdoors or your brightest window indoors; more light means more blooms and a sturdier trunk. Use fast-draining cactus or succulent mix, and let the soil dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering is the most common way to lose this plant.

CLIMATE
Grows outdoors year-round in USDA zone 11. In zone 10 and colder, treat it as a container plant and bring it indoors once nighttime temperatures approach 55°F.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Desert Rose is slow-growing. Because these plants are seed-grown, bloom shades can range from soft to deep pink, and young plants usually start flowering in their first or second year. In winter it rests: cut back watering sharply, and don't worry if it drops some or all of its leaves. That's normal dormancy.
