Meet the Red Abyssinian Banana: a fast-growing ornamental banana relative with enormous paddle-shaped leaves in burgundy, maroon and deep red, grown as an instant tropical focal point.

WHAT ARRIVES
2 live starter plugs, each approximately 12 inches tall, rooted and actively growing. These are young plants: the deep red color develops as they mature in full sun. This is an ornamental variety grown for its foliage, not for edible bananas.

PET NOTE
Ensete ventricosum isn't listed in the ASPCA plant database. Its relative, the edible banana (Musa), is listed as non-toxic to dogs, cats and horses, and we haven't found toxicity concerns reported for Ensete.

WHERE IT SHINES
Patios, pool areas and tropical landscape beds, where its huge leaves make a bold focal point or screen.

GROWING IT
Plant in full sun for the deepest color; in the hottest climates, a little afternoon shade helps prevent leaf scorch. Use rich, moist, well-drained soil, and water and feed regularly during active growth. In the garden, it grows quickly to 8 to 10 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide, with leaves several feet long. Plants in containers stay smaller.

CLIMATE
Grows outdoors year-round in USDA zones 10 to 11. In cooler climates, grow it in a large container brought indoors before frost, or enjoy it as a dramatic summer annual.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Keep soil on the dry side while the plant rests in winter, since a wet, cold base can rot. Ensete flowers only once, after several years, and then dies; it usually doesn't produce offshoots the way edible bananas do.
