Meet Strawberry Guava: an evergreen shrub with sweet-tart fruit reminiscent of strawberries, smooth peeling gray-to-golden bark and white powderpuff flowers.
WHAT ARRIVES
2 live starter plugs, each approximately 6 inches tall. Because these plants are grown from cuttings, size can vary slightly from one plug to the next.
PET & PLANTING NOTE
Strawberry guava isn't listed in the ASPCA plant database, so we can't make a pet-safety claim either way. It's considered invasive in South Florida and Hawaii because birds spread its seeds into natural areas. Please grow it in a container or pick fruit before it drops, and check your local regulations before planting in the ground.
WHERE IT SHINES
Large patio containers, where its attractive bark and fruit can be enjoyed up close.
GROWING IT
Plant in full sun in well-drained soil, and water regularly. It can reach 25 feet but is more often 10 to 15 feet, and stays much smaller in a container.
CLIMATE
Perennial in USDA zones 9 to 11. Elsewhere, grow it in a container brought indoors for winter.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Flowering is heaviest in spring, with fruit following in summer to fall.
