Meet Sweet Potato Vine 'Tricolor': a fast-growing trailing vine with variegated leaves in green, cream and pink, grown for season-long color spilling over baskets and containers.
WHAT ARRIVES
2 live starter plugs, each approximately 10 to 12 inches long, in [size]-inch nursery pots. Because these plants are grown from cuttings, size can vary slightly from one plug to the next. Young plugs look different from the mature, fully trailing vines shown in reference photos.
PET-FRIENDLY NOTE
Sweet potato vine is listed as non-toxic to dogs, cats and horses by the ASPCA. Seeds of Ipomoea plants can be toxic if eaten, but ornamental vines rarely flower or set seed.
WHERE IT SHINES
As a spiller in hanging baskets, window boxes and mixed containers, or trailing over walls and the edges of raised beds. Its soft pink and cream tones pair well with dark foliage and bright flowers.
GROWING IT
Plant in full sun to part shade in average, well-drained soil. In very hot climates, give it afternoon shade to protect the pale variegated leaves. Water regularly for the first few weeks while roots establish, then keep the soil evenly moist. Vines trail up to 3 to 4 feet by season's end.
CLIMATE
Tender perennial in USDA zones 9 to 11, where it may die back after frost and regrow from its roots. In colder areas, grow it as a fast-filling summer annual.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Give young plugs a few weeks to root in before they begin trailing. Pink tones are strongest in good light. If an all-green shoot appears, trim it off so it doesn't take over the variegated growth. Ornamental sweet potato vines can form small tubers, but they aren't grown for eating.
