Meet the Violette de Bordeaux Fig: a French heirloom, also sold as Negronne, prized for small to medium purple-black figs with deep red, strawberry-colored pulp and a rich, sweet flavor.

WHAT ARRIVES
2 live starter plugs, healthy and actively growing. Plant them in full sun and well-drained soil once your last frost has passed, or into large containers.

IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTE
The ASPCA lists Ficus species as toxic to dogs, cats and horses, causing stomach and skin irritation. Fig sap can irritate skin and eyes, and on skin exposed to sunlight it can cause a burn-like rash, so wear gloves when pruning and rinse off any sap. Keep pets and children from chewing leaves and stems.

WHERE IT SHINES
Patio pots, small yards and sunny beds. Its naturally compact habit makes it one of the best figs for containers, and it's self-fertile, so one plant sets fruit without a second tree or fig wasp.

GROWING IT
Give it full sun, at least 6 to 8 hours a day, and well-drained soil. Water deeply and regularly while it establishes and through hot, dry stretches. It typically stays 6 to 10 feet tall with pruning and can grow larger in the ground. Prune in late winter.

CLIMATE
Best suited to USDA zones 7 to 10, and zone 6 with winter protection or container growing.

WHAT TO EXPECT
It often produces an early breba crop in late spring to early summer, followed by the main crop from late summer into fall. In humid, rainy climates, ripe figs can split, so give it a sunny, airy spot and pick fruit promptly.
