Meet the White Bird of Paradise: a bold tropical plant with huge, glossy, banana-like leaves that makes a big impact indoors or on a patio with little fuss.

WHAT ARRIVES
2 live Strelitzia Nicolai starter plugs, approximately 24 to 28 inches tall, rooted and actively growing.

IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTE
The ASPCA lists bird of paradise (Strelitzia) as toxic to dogs, cats and horses. Eating the fruit or seeds can cause stomach upset, nausea or vomiting, and the sap can irritate skin. Keep it out of reach of pets and children, and wear gloves when repotting.

WHERE IT SHINES
Bright living rooms, entryways, patios and pool areas, where its tall, upright leaves add instant tropical texture.

GROWING IT
Indoors, give it bright indirect light or some direct sun; deep shade slows growth. Outdoors, it grows in full sun to part shade once established. Use rich, well-drained soil and water when the top layer feels dry; it becomes more drought tolerant as it matures. Shelter it from strong wind, which splits the leaves.

CLIMATE
Grows outdoors year-round in USDA zones 10 to 11. In cooler areas, grow it in a large container and move it indoors or to a sheltered spot before frost.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Mature size depends on where it grows: up to 20 to 30 feet in the ground outdoors, and usually 6 to 10 feet in a container indoors. Mature plants may bloom with white and blue flowers, usually only after several years. Split leaves are natural for this plant and don't mean it's unhealthy.
