Meet the Zebrina Blood Banana: a collector favorite grown for its broad green leaves streaked and splashed with deep burgundy-red, so every plant has its own pattern.

WHAT ARRIVES
2 live starter plugs, each approximately 12 inches tall, rooted and actively growing. These are young plants; the burgundy markings get bolder as new leaves unfurl.

PET-FRIENDLY NOTE
Banana (Musa) is listed as non-toxic to dogs, cats and horses by the ASPCA.

WHERE IT SHINES
Patio pots, poolside spaces and tropical borders, where its markings make a bold statement.

GROWING IT
Plant in full sun to part shade, with a little afternoon shade in very hot, dry climates to protect the leaf color. Use rich, well-drained soil kept consistently moist, and feed regularly in warm weather. It grows quickly to about 5 to 8 feet in the ground and stays more compact, around 3 to 6 feet, in a container. Shelter it from strong wind, which tears the leaves.

CLIMATE
Grows outdoors year-round in USDA zones 10 to 11. In zone 9, frost damages the leaves, but it may regrow from the base. In cooler areas, grow it as a summer patio plant and bring it indoors before frost.

WHAT TO EXPECT
'Zebrina' is grown for its foliage. Given enough warmth and time it can flower and set small, seedy bananas, but they aren't the sweet bananas sold in stores. Each stem flowers once and dies back, while new pups grow from the base.
